Author Jan Voogd at Maynard Library - In the summer of 1919, black communities in America were targeted by white violence. This period known as the “red summer” and the reaction to it are, according to local author Jan Voogd, an early stage of what came to be known as the Civil Rights Movement. Voogd will be at the Maynard Library on Thursday, December 4 at 7:00 p.m. to discuss her book Race Riots and Resistance that talks about this long-hidden, tragic chapter of American History. In her book Voogd describes the events of this period in detail and analyzes what it tells us about racial violence. The event is free and open to the public. The Maynard Public Library is located at 77 Nason Street in Maynard. For more info, contact Dottie MacKeen at 978-897-2863 or dotmac@verizon.net |
